Consider the Burden of Convenience

Ding!  The alert notification function on my phone went off.  My quilt buddies looked puzzled as I giggled. " Rudy was stuck on a cliff"  I knew I was free! My goofy smile continued the puzzled looks. I launched into the explanation of dark places interrupting Rudy's daily cycle.

Early in my relationship with Rudy I became quite frustrated. Rudy would stop in the middle of my patterned carpet and claim he was stuck on a cliff, ready to fall.  Falling is the kind of message that made me jump to the rescue.

I made an appointment with the information doctor, the internet, as any worthy wanna be millennial.  Again,, a friendly and informative video provided me with the cure and what appeared to be an easy return to my freedom from cleaning.
Closeup of Rudy's Early Warning System

The friendly voice  explained, with the aid of practiced hands (the only appearance of any human) Rudy's early warning system.  Sensors on Rudy's undercarriage triggered a stop when the floor appeared black.  The assumption was Rudy approached a flight of stairs and potentially a tumble down them. The lovely black outline of a flower in my carpet's pattern triggered this protective measure.

Fortunately, the wise hands of the video gave me careful instructions to trick Rudy's warning system.  Carefully use a layer of tape, white paper and more tape to cover the cliff detectors.

VOILA!  Rudy blissfully complete his daily assignment without warning stoppages.  I thought I was brilliant and free! Until....

The day I realized I was burdened with Rudy's protection.  There is only one staircase in our house, the stairs to the basement.  We were in the basement, that day, reorganizing our treasures.  I smiled when I heard Rudy's start chime and his rumble across the floor above me.  I could hear him in the hallway approaching the Open Basement Door---A Very Real High Cliff to Rudy.

I dropped the treasures I held, rushed up the stairs and stopped Rudy in his tracks!  Once he was moved to a new safe location I restarted his job.Yet now I had to stand guard over him if the basement  door was open.

Now I had a new job, protecting Rudy.  Until....

The day Rudy sent that peculiar high cliff message yet was not stuck on the black carpet.  My consultation with Dr. Hand and Voice from the internet video, brought a great AHA (revelation) and freedom.

To solve the current problem, I removed the tricky tape and white paper.  I was set free. The next day I acknowledged the deceiving of Rudy to eliminate those stoppages, added to my responsibility.  I had been burdened rather than freed. Rudy's true purpose in my life is to give me freedom from a cleaning task.  My purpose for Rudy is avoidance of cleaning, at all costs.

Rudy's wisdom for today...To be truly Free, consider the "cost" of convenience.

Props to Rudy and the Troops

Molly giving Rudy respect Rudy's appointed time arrived and he entered the living area.  All three dogs rose from napping position and left the room.  My initial thought was they feared Rudy, the robot vacuum. Yet,  as wise old Makena walked past hardworking Rudy I sensed an acknowledgment of thanks.  She's a stubborn, feisty badger.  Fearless in the face of superior forces. She's not afraid of Rudy. She's not even annoyed when he vacuums her safe spot under the bed. The wise one knows Rudy is a vital member of this community. His service keeps the household dust and hair population to a manageable amount. Makena's "props" to Rudy reminded me of all those Essential Troopers who are keeping my life safe and secure.  I wouldn't survive the COVID 19 Quarantine without the sacrificial service of so many.  THANK YOU to all the Essentials who provide for our community.

Rudy's Retreat Advice

To you  this photo is mysterious and indecipherable.  To me it was horrifying!  I moved the quilt rack to discover a dust bunnys as big as my fist.  My initial thought-  Rudy failed at his only job.  In reality I had obstructed his access to the corner.  Who knew what "evil" lurked in the corners and edges until it is revealed? Three lessons I learned from the over-sized dust bunny seem fitting advice for today's  life challenges.  (I'm already in Day 11 of my "retreat", as I call the stay at home order.) Be thorough. Move the obstacles to reveal the situation. I blocked Rudy's path.  Rudy's not to blame.  Blame really doesn't minister to the current situations.  History will provide the look back fault finding or maybe not. I'm still looking for the unknown child who spread measles to me as a 25 year old on Christmas vacation.over 40 years ago. Be consistent.  Keep the planned schedule for success. I was guilty o...

A Simple Message

In today’s crazy situation Rudy reminds me to return to simple life, to return home. He sings a happy tune as he arrives at his home base for recharging and refreshing (an empty dust bin). I often interrupt his planned schedule. Rudy always returns to the sanctity of his home. Rudy says: Use this time in life to recharge and refresh. I say: Be safe.
